How to use Garmin-formatted img maps on Android

I like using the Trailforks app in combination with my Garmin Edge 520, but sometimes I'm riding somewhere where I don't have cell service but still want to use my phone to help with navigation.

Trailforks provides offline maps in the Garmin (img) format for use on my GPS, but I wanted them on my phone.

Here is how I did it. Note that this will work for other maps in the img format also.

Download Oruxmaps

Oruxmaps is a powerful, free map viewer that can do many more things.

First, download and install Oruxmaps.

Download the map

Download the region map from Trailforks by following their instructions.

I copied the img file onto my phone and moved it into the /oruxmaps/mapfiles/ folder.

Select the map

Open Oruxmaps and select the map icon.

 From the map menu, choose Switch map.

Switch map

Next select OFFLINE and choose the map, in this case 3181_2018_01_ARIZONA (IMG).

Select offline map

That's it!
